Specific Areas That Will be Covered in This Year’s Course Are:
The first three lectures will be covering "airway". Most of our problems come from incomplete development of "Craino Facial" complex, where we grow from infant to age 15-21 years old. Bad habits will multiply in various symptoms and discomfort in eating, sleeping, athletics and enjoying life. There are numerous symptoms that overlap from ear problems, TMJ, and Occlusal problems that require basic knowledge to make an accurate differential diagnostic plan. In some cases it may be necessary to refer a patient to a proper "Doctor" for definitive treatment. With basic knowledge you can help the patient with their problem and expedite therapy and long term solutions or morbidities.
October 28, 2010 Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Dr. Doug Phillips
Obstructive Sleep Apnea and snoring are problems that have been around for a long time. In the last several years their importance has come into its rightful place and that importance is still growing. It is a major factor in heart disease, stroke, diabetes, mental fogginess, impotence, daytime sleppiess, car accident fatalities, and many other factors. The medical answer to this dilemma is the cpap machine (continuous positive air pressure). There is a very high incidence of CPAP intolerance, some say 75% or more. Guess what, dentistry has a great answer to the problem. The oral appliance, when done properly, solves the problem and enhances lives. There are many areas of dentistry that contribute greatly to or are even the causative factor to chronic illness and chronic pain. There are also many chronic illnesses that cannot be solved without dental intervention. I will cover how obstructive sleep apnea stands in the way of disease resolution. Dentistry holds a lot of wanted and needed answers. At the end of his lecture I will conduct a brief screening on the people attending who want it.
December 9, 2010 Dr. Joshua Light ENT
Dr. Light will discuss Benign Positional Vertigo, floaters in the ear, what is Meniere's syndrome, causes, symptoms, tinnitus and treatment. Also sinus disease, treatment and expected resolution.
Last half of morning lecture will be Preparations for Crowns.
January 13, 2011 Dr. Peter Wohlgemuth
Dr. Peter Wohlgemuth received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Applied Science and Engineeering in 1980. He graduated dental school from Boston University in 1984 and was elected into the Omicron Kapse Upsilon Dental Honor Society. Dr. Wohlgemuth continued his study of orthodontics at Boston University. His research on Orthodontics and condylar position was published in the American Journal of Orthodontics in 1986. Dr. Wohlgemuth is a diplomat of the American Board of Orthodontics and past president of the South Florida Academy of Orthodontics. currently he is on the clinical advisory board of Orametrix, which is the present company of Suresmile. Suresmile integrated conebeam radiology, white light scanning and robotic technology to deliver orthodontic therapy in less time and at a higher quality. This has been documented by a study published in The World Journal of Orthodontics in the spring of 2010.
Dr. Wohlgemuth will discuss orthodontic diagnosis utilizing the cone beam technology. This includes looking at airway as well as being able to locate impacted teeth better and being able to pick up pathology. Dr. Wohlgemuth will also discuss the evolution of orthodontics over the past twenty years and how the Suresmile technology is able to reduce treatment time in most cases to 12 months or less in fixed appliances and how it is done "smarter", not quicker, therefore not increasing any of the risks associated orthodontic therapy.
