The Oral Implantology program is a comprehensive three year course consisting of a one year prosthetic and two year surgical residency. There are 21 full days of instruction consisting of a morning didactic seminar and an afternoon clinical session where the general dentist or specialist can gain experience performing surgical or prosthetic procedures on patients. It is patterned after the AAID Maxicourse.
The morning seminar will provide extensive exposure to a wide variety of surgical and prosthetic implant procedures. The didactic sessions will train the doctor to diagnose and treatment plan simple to more complex dental implant cases. There will also be a comprehensive review and an opportunity to work with all of the major implant systems.
The clinical sessions will provide an opportunity to perform dental implant procedures on live patients. Residents will be assisted by a co-chairman to gain experience in the surgical phase as a prerequisite to working on patients. Surgical procedures will be performed under the guidance and direction of a co-chairman who will be assigned to that case, allowing the doctor to acquire the knowledge, training and confidence needed to incorporate this sophisticated care into their dental practice.
At the end of the program, the resident will have a comprehensive understanding of dental implant procedures. There will also be exposure to and experience with the prosthetic components of each system so that the prosthetic reconstruction may be completed. This program is also designed to prepare the doctor for AAID, ABOI, and ICOI fellow/diplomate exams.
Each resident, in addition to treating Research Clinic patients, is expected to provide a minimum of one private patient per year who is a candidate for dental implant treatment. For Research Clinic patients, prosthetic care will be at current Atlantic Coast Dental Research Clinic prosthetic fees. The course is limited to 30 residents with priority given to returning doctors; it is highly recommended that you sign up early if you desire to enroll in this unique program.
